Recent advancements in ePaper technology have enabled displays to expand beyond e-readers and into the realm of tablets. Onyx International now offers a 10.3-inch color E Ink tablet in addition to its 13.3-inch monochromatic slate.
The Boox Tab Ultra C is essentially a color version of the company’s black-and-white Tab Ultra ePaper tablet from the previous year, which just won an iF design award.
This new model utilizes E Ink’s Kaleido 3 color technology, which is reportedly more color-rich than the Plus technology used in color e-readers such as the PocketBook InkPad Color.
This translates to a 10.3-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1,240 x 930 (150 ppi) for color or 2,480 x 1,860 (300 ppi) for grayscale.
Pre-order the Tab Ultra C for $599.99 with a magnetic 2-in-1 keyboard shell for typing.
The device features Boox Super Refresh for the guarantee of fluid and responsive visuals, auto screen rotation, the ability to display 4,096 colors, and an integrated warm/cold ComfortGaze front light for use at night.
A Qualcomm octa-core processor and “exclusive GPU” drive the show, supported by 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal UFS 2.1 storage with microSD expansion (plus 10 GB of free cloud storage by registering for an Onyx account; the tablet is also compatible with third-party cloud and sync services).
Android 11 is also preinstalled, and the device is compatible with a variety of document formats, including PDF, DOCX, EPUB, RTF, and HTML, as well as the most popular image formats and WAV and MP3 audio.
There are also dual speakers and dual microphones, dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0, as well as a generous 6,300 mAh LiPo battery, which should allow for long periods away from electrical outlets, though no estimates have been provided.
The E Ink tablet includes a 16-megapixel rear camera for document scanning and is compatible with third-party photo/scan applications, “providing versatile options for capturing and managing documents with ease.” It comes packaged with a Pen2 Pro instrument that features 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity and an integrated eraser.
