Throughout my 9-year tech writing career, I’ve spent hours checking headphones at the world’s largest electronics retailers. I enjoy reading about headphones and people’s purchase experiences. Every day, the headphones industry surprises me. Mid-range headphones are shaking up the market.
They are cheaper than their high-end rivals yet have a premium feel and great sound. Consumers like this. Sony’s new WH-CH720H over-ear headphones offer a cheaper alternative to its flagship WH-1000XM5 and bring Japanese flair and quality to a larger audience. An in-depth assessment of the Sony WH-CH720N noise-canceling headphones after a few days.
Sony WH-CH720N appearance and feel?
The WH-CH720N looks and feels like quality over-ear headphones but is not noise-canceling. Sony-like clean and simple. Although composed of plastic, the matte soft-touch headphones are durable. The headband and ear pads are thinner and broader with more memory foam for comfort. Reviewing a white model. Two more colors are available (blue and black).
If you have bigger oval ear cups, your experience may differ. USB-C charges and 3.5mm connect the headset. The right earcup contains volume and noise-cancellation buttons. I hated that Sony’s new over-ear headphones couldn’t fold.
These headphones are flat. To protect them, I need a backpack section. I must be more careful when traveling with them. To lower the price, Sony doesn’t supply a case for these headphones. Nevertheless, I recently got the Amazon universal over-ear headphone case, which looks like a good choice for protecting headphones.
Are they comfy?
The Sony WH-CH720N proved comfortable on a Dubai flight. I fell asleep without realizing I had headphones on. The headphones were lightweight and pleasant due to their design. The 192-gram Sony WH-CH720N. I’ve never used lighter over-ear headphones. Bose 700 and Sony WH-1000XM4 weigh 249 and 251 grams, respectively.
Jog with the Sony WH-CH720N. I think the headset appropriately distributes weight, therefore I never felt uncomfortable using the headphones for a long period whether sitting erect at my desk in front of my laptop or relaxing on my couch.
Their sound?
Everyone wants comfortable headphones, but the sound is the main reason to buy any audio gear. Sony WH-CH720N audio was good. Sony headphones provide good sound despite not being audiophile-grade. The vocals were quite impressive. Kya Yahi Pyar Hai by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar had amazing vocals and instrument separation. Kho Gaye Hum Kaha by Jasleen Royal and Prateek Kuhad was enjoyable. These headphones play music without distortion or loss. The Sony WH-CH720N only struggled with aggressive dance music. I expected more punch. Sony’s Headphones Connect app for Android and iOS has EQ adjustments to customize these headphones’ sound. Yet, the WH-CH720N are Sony headphones. The sound is great.
Are they noise-canceling?
I tried the Sony WH-noise CH720N’s reduction in traffic, a busy Dubai Mall area, and at the airport. These headphones reduce street noise and adjacent sounds. Compared to Bose 700 or Apple AirPods Max, Sony WH-CH720N noise-cancellation isn’t enough to entirely mute the world. The ambient Sound is great. During testing, it worked for me. The Ambient Sound option is ideal for headphones-wearers who wish to hear conversations.
Observations
I frequently used Sony’s new over-ear headphones for phone conversations. The Sony WH-CH720N eliminated external noise and wireless headphones’ echo for many callers. The battery lasts 35 hours with noise cancelling on and 50 hours without. These headphones enable multipoint, so you may pair two Bluetooth devices. These headphones enable 360-degree reality audio, Google Assistant, and Alexa, but they lack Sony’s LDAC codec for higher-quality wireless audio.
